Tyler, the Creator Makes Theme Song for Bill Nye’s New Netflix Show

by Malachi Weaver April 20, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s new Netflix show Bill Nye Saves the World premieres this Friday, and news has now come out that the show’s new theme song was created by Tyler, the Creator.

Tyler, the Creator’s take draws from the iconic theme from the original Bill Nye the Science Guy show. Like the previous theme, Tyler’s show has a repetitive fast-paced chanting of the name “Bill!”

The theme is first featured in a tweet from Saturday, showing Nye and Tyler discussing the song’s inspiration and Tyler talking about watching Bill Nye growing up.

“That show got kids to not hate science class and that full-on worked,” Tyler told Nye. Nye then responded to Tyler saying “You like science, look at you now.”

Tegan and Sara and YouTube Creators Criticize YouTube for Restricting LGBTQ Videos

by Malachi Weaver March 20, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

Many top YouTube creators are criticizing the platform over its “Restricted Mode” feature, which many says is unnecessarily blocking LGBTQ-related videos. Restricted Mode, as explained by YouTube is meant to be an “optional feature used by a very small subset of users who want to have a more limited YouTube experience.” Users began to point out last week, however, that the feature also censors videos referencing same-sex issues, as well as coming-out videos.

The Restricted Modes uses “community flagging, age-restrictions, and other signals to identify and filter out potentially inappropriate content” and is often by used by schools, libraries, and parents to avoid NFSW content.

YouTube responded to the criticism on Sunday (March 19), by insisting that “LGBTQ+ videos are available in Restricted Mode, but videos that discuss more sensitive issues may not be.”

A message to our community … pic.twitter.com/oHNiiI7CVs

— YouTube Creators (@YTCreators) March 20, 2017

Many YouTube creators have criticized the platform since YouTube’s announcement, including Canadian pop-rock group Tegan and Sara.

Hey guys! We're available to chat if you guys want to explain why advice sites like @everyoneisgay is now restricted. Or why our dancing is! https://t.co/89MFvYSRS5

— Tegan and Sara (@teganandsara) March 20, 2017

See more of the fallout towards YouTube below.

@YTCreators @YouTube If they're a tiny subset then why are you catering your platform to them. I'm sorry dad but this is not only vague but seems like a lie.

— Jenna Marbles (@Jenna_Marbles) March 20, 2017

@YTCreators Step 1: Agree that there is a problem. Step 2: Suspend the program. Step 3: Thank creators for discovering this problem.

— Hank Green (@hankgreen) March 20, 2017

@YTCreators This did nothing but confirm the insane idea that some people find very NORMAL videos to be "sensitive issues"
WHY cater to them

— natalie tran (@natalietran) March 20, 2017

.@YTCreators you blocked my coming out video that addresses labels we face daily, a video MADE for LGBTQ youth – nothing is sensitive.

— Jordan Doww (@JordanDoww) March 20, 2017

.@YTCreators you're blocking everything with any hint of lgbtq+! Vids of me swearing aren't restricted but transwomen makeup tutorials are

— dodie (@doddleoddle) March 20, 2017

.@YTCreators my coming out video is restricted.. can't at all wrap my mind around how that's possible

— Shannon Beveridge (@nowthisisliving) March 20, 2017

@YTCreators coming out videos should not be classified as "sensitive content" unless videos abt heteronormative dating also classify

— venmo famous meat (@AlexisGZall) March 20, 2017

@YTCreators pls, pls, fix the feed, more than 3 weeks and im still waiting the notification for some of my videos… :S

— AlphaSniper97 (@Alphasniper97) March 20, 2017

@YTCreators you guys have no clue what you're doing.

Jaden Smith and Shia LeBeouf Make Interactive Anti-Trump Art Installment in NYC

by Malachi Weaver January 20, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

As a protest to the inauguration of Donald Trump, Jaden Smith and Shia LeBeouf have created an interactive art installment in New York City. Having a camera set up outside the Museum of the Moving Image, the two consider their project “a show of resistance or insistence, opposition, or optimism.”

The installment opened this morning (Jan. 20) at 9 a.m. ET, with Smith himself taking place in part of it. As stated on the project’s website, hewillnotdivide.us., “the public is invited to deliver the words ‘HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US’ into a camera mounted on a wall outside Museum of the Moving Image, New York, repeating the phrase as many times, and for as long as they wish.”

A live stream of the project can be seen at hewillnotdivide.us. According to the website, the stream will be open “24 hours a day, seven days a week,” for the next for years, “or the duration of the presidency.”

Go to hewillnotdivide.us. to see the stream for yourself.

New From Maggie Rogers – “On and Off”

by Malachi Weaver January 17, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

“I’ve spent my whole life making quiet music,” Maggie Rogers told BBC Radio 1. “I’m really, really excited to be a little loud.

Rogers took to BBC Radio 1 to share her single “On and Off,” from her debut EP Now That The Light Is Fading. As she puts it, “It’s a song you can dance to and a song you can get down to, but for me there’s a lot of heart and soul in it, too.”

She also explained that for her, the song has a deeper meaning than what one might hear on the first listen. “There’s a sort of sexual cliché in the song,” she says. “There’s a lyric that says ‘You turn me on’ but if you listen to the rest of the lyrics, that is actually about emotional stability. Being on and off and finding a person that grounds you. Because I think that’s one of the things that’s most important to me in relationships.”
Listen to “On and Off” and the rest of Maggie Rogers’ interview with BBC Radio 1 below.

Kendrick Lamar has teamed up again with Reebok for his third sneaker collection, this time designed to promote “unity and equality.” The collection is a reinvention of Reebok’s Club C model.

In a statement to the media, Lamar explained the design by saying that “Now more than ever it is important for individuals to come together as one. This sneaker represents that call for unity and equality, while also pushing people to look beneath the surface and uncover the hidden messages. This is something I try to do with my music, and now here with the Club C.

Lamar’s first collaboration with Reebok came in 2015 with the Ventilator shoe, then again in 2016 with Lamar’s redesign of the Classic Leather sneaker.

The Kendrick Lamar X Reebok Club C will be available starting January 13th, ranging at $109.99 for adult sizes, $70 for kid sizes, and $50 for toddler sizes.

by Malachi Weaver December 28, 2016
written by Malachi Weaver

As Gucci Mane’s “Both”, featuring Drake, debuts at No. 41 on the Hot 100, Drake ties Lil Wayne as the solo artist with the most Hot 100 appearances. This ranking includes all artists charted since the Hot 100’s creation in 1958.

The only group to have more appearances than Drake or Lil Wayne, tied at 132, is the cast of Glee with 207.

Most Hot 100 Entries All-Time

Glee Cast, 207
Drake, 132
Lil Wayne, 132
Elvis Presley, 108
James Brown, 91
Jay Z, 86
Chris Brown, 82
Kanye West, 80
Ray Charles, 75
Aretha Franklin, 73
The Beatles, 71
Nicki Minaj, 70
Taylor Swift, 70

It should be noted that the Hot 100 did originate two years after Elvis Presley’s career launched. Still, Presley leads the chart with the most entries by a soloist as the lead act (in all 108 of his listings). James Brown takes second place in this category, with all 91 of his listings being lead acts as well.
