The song was co-produced by J Gramm and Rook Monroe, and written by CL. “Goodbye” was originally written for CL’s solo career in the U.S., until YG Entertainment thought the song was better for the group.

The band’s Minzy left in April of 2016 to pursue a solo career and likely won’t be featured on the final single. Contracts for the remaining members of 2NE1 expired last May and were not renewed. Dara and CL are starting solo careers as well, still signed with YG Entertainment.
