After breaking his two-year hiatus on Friday with two new singles, Ed Sheeran has broken the Spotify records for one-day streams.
Sheeran’s “Shape of You” garnered 6,868,642 million plays once it was released on Friday, according to his record company Warner Music. “Castle On The Hill,” also released by Sheeran on Friday was listened to 6,168,395 times, giving Sheeran a total of over 13 million plays in a day.
Both songs break the previous Spotify record by One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” on July 31, 2015, with 4,759,698 plays. Before that, Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” held the record, streamed 4.26 million times on April 17, 2015.
“Shape of You” and “Castle On The Hill” are to appear on Sheeran’s upcoming album ÷, pronounced “divide.” The release date for ÷ has not been announced.
