Sony Music Publishing announced it has appointed Francisco Granados as Vice President, Creative, U.S. Latin. Francisco is based in the company’s Miami office and reports to Jorge Mejia, President and CEO, Latin America and U.S. Latin.

As Vice President, Creative, Francisco’s responsibilities include providing strategic direction for U.S. Latin A&R efforts, signing and discovering new talent, and working closely with Sony Music Publishing’s songwriters to further develop their careers and create new, global opportunities for their songs.

Sony Music Publishing President and CEO, Latin America and U.S. Latin, Jorge Mejia, said, “Francisco is an A&R executive who possesses that rare mix of talent for discovering and nurturing artists and songwriters, matched with an impeccable business acumen. I have admired Francisco since I first started working with him early on in his career, and am beyond excited about what we will do together in this new phase.”

Francisco said, “I’m thrilled and honored to join Jorge Mejia and the fantastic U.S. Latin team. Sony Music Publishing gave me my first opportunity to be part of the ever-evolving music industry, and I’m grateful to reunite with a family that shares my passion for music. I look forward to further developing our songwriters creatively and bringing the Latin culture to fans across the globe.”

Previously, Granados was A&R Director at Warner Music Mexico, Colombia, Peru and the Andean Region, a position he held since 2019. As A&R Director, Francisco was responsible for overseeing the creative process of acclaimed acts including Piso 21, Danny Ocean, Ximena Sariñana, Llane, Juan Pablo Vega, Mario Bautista, LAGOS, Beto Cuevas, and the Latin Grammy award winner for best new artist, Mike Bahia.

Prior to joining Warner, Francisco spent four years as A&R Director at Sony Music Publishing Mexico, where he played a key role in the signings of Julio Ramírez from Reik, Mario Bautista, and the renewals of José Luis Roma, Carlos Rivera, Noel Schajris, and Zoé. He also supported the discovery, signing, and development of the early songwriting careers of Danny Ocean and Keityn. Before beginning his career as an A&R, Francisco spent time as a journalist and radio host.

Justin Bieber Admits That He Does Not Know The Lyrics To ‘Despacito’

by Malachi Weaver June 13, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

Justin Bieber got in trouble with fans a couple of weeks ago when he butchered his lyrics in a performance of “Despacito (Remix)” in a nightclub in New York City. Instead of singing the correct lyrics, Bieber sang “blah blah blah,” “burrito,” and “Dorito.” During a set at Summerburst Festival in Stockholm, Sweden, the singer admitted that this was because he actually does not know the words.

“I can’t do that song specifically, I don’t even know it,” Bieber said when fans began to request Despacito. “I can’t do it.” Someone in the crowd then threw what was probably a plastic bottle towards his head.

Luis Fonsi, who created the original version of “Despacito” with Daddy Yankee, somewhat defended Bieber’s performance in an interview with Rolling Stone. “That chorus is not easy to sing, even for fluent Spanish singers like myself,” Fonsi said. “It’s got a lot of lyrics, it’s kind of tongue-twisty.”

Luis Fonsi Defends Justin Bieber’s Butchering of ‘Despacito’ Lyrics

by Malachi Weaver June 2, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

Even Luis Fonsi admits that the lyrics to his song “Despacito” are a bit complicated, so he doesn’t blame Justin Bieber for butchering them. While videos surfaced last week of Justin Bieber in a club replacing the song’s lyrics with “blah, blah, blah” adlibs and saying “I don’t know the words so I say ‘Dorito’”, Fonsi seems to hold no hard feelings toward the singer.

“That chorus is not easy to sing, even for fluent Spanish singers like myself,” Fonsi told Rolling Stone. “It’s got a lot of lyrics, it’s kind of tongue-twisty.”

Fonsi also explained to Rolling Stone how Bieber ended up on the track. Bieber first heard the song in a club while on tour in South America and immediately reached out to see if he could add a verse. “He saw how people reacted, and right away he was like, ‘I want to be a part of this movement,’” Fonsi said.

Bieber also, according to Fonsi, was the one that initiated that he would sing the song’s chorus in Spanish – making this his first attempt at singing a song in Spanish. “It’s big for Latin music that a global star like Justin Bieber takes the time to do the song, to do it in Spanish,” says Fonsi. “I’ve done songs in other languages, I know how hard it is.”

by Malachi Weaver May 30, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

Many of Marc Anthony’s greatest hits, “La Gozadera” and “Valió la Pena” for example, have now been reimagined as kid-friendly in the new instrumental children’s album Marc Anthony for Babies.

Marc Anthony For Babies, released under Anthony’s Magnus Music label, contains 10 of Anthony’s classics, remade as instrumentals. The album was executive produced by Ignacio “Nacho” Mendoza and has production by Anthony, Nacho, and Carlos Escalona Cruz.

“Marc Anthony is not only an icon, he is also a musical institution. I grew up admiring his talent, he continues to deliver hits and his body of work is more relevant than ever,” Nacho said in a statement. “Marc has a vast amount of classics that I personally want to introduce to a whole new generation. I believe that music is one of the most important elements that can assist in the formation of an individual, and I love the idea of exposing kids to music in the early stages of their lives.”

Anthony also added, “I was thrilled when I first heard Nacho’s idea of turning my music into an instrumental format inspired for children.”

written by Malachi Weaver

Justin Bieber’s addition to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s hit “Despacito” helped push the song to the top, making “Despacito” the first song in Spanish in twenty years to hit No. 1.

While Bieber’s Spanish vocals did not seem to be a problem on the studio version, Bieber, unfortunately, forgot the words at a New York City nightclub last night (May 23).

Bieber substitutes the vocals with a “blah blah blah” adlib, in the tune of his original verse. Watch TMZ captured footage of the mishap above.

Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s ‘Despacito’ Remix With Justin Bieber Makes 2017’s Biggest YouTube Music Debut

by Malachi Weaver April 20, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

A remix to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” immediately catapulted to high views on YouTube, partly because of guest vocals from Justin Bieber – who sings in Spanish on the track. According to YouTube, the remix has been the largest debut of a song on the platform this year.

The song, released Monday, gained close to 20 million views internationally in the first 24 hours of uploading. No music video uploaded to YouTube has grown that fast this year.

Fonsi and Yankee’s original version to the song itself has over 1 billion views and has stayed at the top of YouTube’s Global Music Top 100 chart.

Shakira: “I’d Be An Amazing Doctor” At World Economic Forum

by Malachi Weaver January 18, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

If Shakira wasn’t a singer, what would she be? “Probably a doctor,” she said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

“I like medicine,” she said in an on-stage interview. Her “specialty,” she said, would likely be neuroscience, as the practice and similar discoveries about the brain “fascinate” her.

When the audience was asked if they would prefer to see Shakira as a doctor or musician, the crowd voiced clear favor of her current career choice. “I’d be an amazing doctor,” Shakira promised, before adding “I’d be a sexy doctor, though.”

When talking about her first interest in music, Shakira told the audience that her music teacher did not like her voice and would not let her into the school choir. The singer also recalled how many of her classmates told her: “Shakira, you sing like a goat.” It was her father though, the singer said, that was able to reassure her otherwise.

This interview came the day after Shakira won the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award for her humanitarian work. Shakira started her charity Fundacion Piez Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation) when she was 18 with the mission of making education universally accessible to children. She got the idea for the nonprofit after her parents took her to a park where orphaned children were living and sleeping. The image stayed with her, she said. “I wanted to build state-of-the-art schools.”

“It is a challenge, and it comes with many obstacles,” Shakira explained. “We work in very remote areas,” and lack of infrastructure often makes things difficult.

Shakira also spoke on social media and how it gives people the power to make big changes and to build and support good causes. “You don’t really need to be a celebrity to effect change,” she told the Forum. “Thanks to the power of social media, everybody really has a platform and a voice.”
