Bruce Springsteen Talks About Childhood And Donald Trump with Marc Maron on “WTF”

by Malachi Weaver January 3, 2017
written by Malachi Weaver

Bruce Springsteen guests on Marc Maron’s most recent “WTF” podcast, aired on January 2. Springsteen and Maron talk about Springsteen’s childhood and the relationship between him and his father and how that relationship was shaped through mental illness.

In the interview Springsteen also regards Donald Trump’s upcoming presidency, calling Trump “un-American” and questioning his competence.

“I’ve felt disgust before, but never the kind of fear that you feel now. It’s as simple as the fear of, is someone simply competent enough to do this particular job? Forget about where they are ideologically. Do they simply have the pure competence to be put in the position of such responsibility?”

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam Gives $10,000 To Family After Mother’s Christmas Plea Goes Viral

by Malachi Weaver December 28, 2016
written by Malachi Weaver

On December 19, mother Tyshika Britten wrote a plea on Craigslist that would soon go viral. In it, she writes that the family is facing eviction and she worries that she will not be able to give her children a Christmas.

“I am a mother of six, 5 boys and 1 baby girl,” Britten wrote. “I’m so hurt. I’m trying my best. I pray everyday and now I’m begging for help. I know it’s not about the gifts, but they are kids! I’m such a failure right now . . . please help me.”

After the Washington Post wrote a story about the listing, both the original listing and the Post article went viral. This is how the family got Vedder’s attention.

“I was just so moved by the story and what this mother did for her children,” Vedder said to the Washington Post on Sunday. “I thought those kids must be so proud of their mother for reaching out. That takes a lot of courage.”

Vedder also told the Post that the family’s situation was reminiscent of his own upbringing. “There were years there were toys from Santa, but they were used and they came from garage sales and they didn’t always work.” He then said although he knows his check won’t solve all of the family’s problems, he hoped he could provide a sort of “tourniquet” to assist.

The family was not aware of who Vedder was when they received the check. “Is he in a band?” Britten says she asked when she saw the check. Britten used Google to search the name and found that he was the leader of Pearl Jam. She says that the family has since started to watch his concerts online.

Tupac to be Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

by Malachi Weaver December 21, 2016
written by Malachi Weaver

Rapper Tupac Shakur will posthumously be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tupac will be the sixth rapper to be inducted, but the first solo artist. The previous rap groups to be inducted before him include Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and N.W.A.

Other artists to be inducted next year include Pearl Jam, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, and Joan Baez. The induction ceremony is set to happen in April 2017.

The announcement of Tupac into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has not been without controversy. People have long criticized the inclusion of rap artists in this ceremony. Last year when N.W.A. was inducted, Gene Simmons of KISS had much to say on the topic, including that he is “looking forward to the death of hip-hop.” On the topic of rappers in the Hall of Fame Simmons said “You’ve got Grandmaster Flash in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Run-D.M.C. in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? You’re killing me. That doesn’t mean those aren’t good artists. But they don’t play guitar. They sample and they talk. Not even sing.” After much back and forth with rapper Ice Cube on the subject, Simmons said on Twitter “Respectfully– let me know when @JimiHendrix gets into the hip hop hall of fame. Then youll have a point.”

Ice Cube held his ground in defense of rap artist being into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by going back to Rock and Roll’s origins. He tweeted to Gene Simmons “Who stole the soul? Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Chubby Checkers help invent Rock ‘n’ Roll. We invent it. Y’all reprint it.”

Paul McCartney to Release ‘Archived Collection’ Reissue of Flowers in the Dirt

by Malachi Weaver December 20, 2016
written by Malachi Weaver

Paul McCartney has announced plans to release an ‘Archived Collection’ for his Flowers in the Dirt, due in 2017. The original album is to be remastered and rereleased on CD, vinyl, and in a deluxe edition box set.

The deluxe edition is to include never before heard demos of songs recorded by McCartney with Elvis Costello, who collaborated with McCartney in the original release. The box set also promises a 32 page notebook of handwritten notes from McCartney, a 112 page book documenting the creation process of the album, a catalogue of Linda McCartney’s 1989 photo exhibition Flowers in the Dirt, as well as archival footage of the album’s creation.

McCartney in a press release said of the album “The demos are red hot off the skillet and that’s why we wanted to include them on this boxed set. What’s great about these songs is that they’ve just been written. So there’s nothing more hot off the skillet as I say. So that was the kind of great instant thing about them. I hadn’t listened to them in ages but when I did I knew we had to put them out. We made a little tape of them and sent them to Elvis, who loved them too. We said we should put out an EP or something and now the moment’s finally arrived.”

The reissue of Flowers in the Dirt is due March 24, 2017. McCartney’s most recent compilation, Pure McCartney was released this past June.
